Presently, I am Professor of Criminal Justice, University of Wisconsin Superior and Director of its Criminal Justice Program.  I also serve as a member of several organizations including the Douglas County Domestic Violence Coordinated Community Response Team, Douglas County Criminal Justice Team; and the Baeumler Kaplan Holocaust Commemoration Committee.

Previously, I served as President of three organizations:  City of Superior Police and Fire Commission; Wisconsin Criminal Justice Education Association; and Missouri Coalition for Alternatives to Imprisonment.  I was National Advisor and Board Member of the National Criminal Justice Honor Society, Alpha Phi Sigma; an Advisory Committee Member of the Correctional Sciences Program, Wisconsin Indianhead Technical College; Cofounder of the Douglas County Restorative Justice Initiative; and member of Children First.  Finally I was a Confidential Assistant to the Codes Committee of the New York State Assembly and a Research Assistant in the Mental Health Research Unit, New York State Department of Mental Hygiene.

Papers have been published and/or presented on restorative justice, the social construction of masculinity, violence prevention, plea bargaining, military justice, alternatives to incarceration, the criminal insane and juvenile justice.

Teaching has taken place at the University of Wisconsin, Barron County; University of Missouri St. Louis; University of Maryland, European Division & Munich Campus; and the State University of New York at Albany.

Formal education was completed at the State University of New York at Albany, receiving a Ph.D. from the School of Criminal Justice (1981), a Master’s Degree in Criminal Justice (1973); a Master’s Degree in Political Science (1971) and a Bachelor of Arts, Cum Laude, in History (1969).

Professionally, I see myself as engaged in the business of “harm reduction,” that is, working to lessen violence, injury or egregious loss.

On a personal note, I was born in The Bronx, New York.  We have an adult son, a small dog named Grace and enjoy bike riding as well as traveling.   I am an avid baseball and football fan.
