101 Beginning German I (3) Study of language fundamentals with emphasis on development of listening and speaking skills. Practice in reading and writing. Presumes no previous language study. F06, F07

 

102 Beginning German II (3) Continuation of GERM 101. Appropriate for someone with up to two years of high school German. Prerequisite: GERM 101 or equivalent. S07, S08

 

201 Intermediate German I (3) Intensive oral practice; review of fundamentals of German; conversation; reading. Appropriate for someone with two or three years of high school German. Prerequisite: GERM 102 or equivalent. F06, F07

 

202 Intermediate German II (3) Contemporary German usage, through the reading and oral discussion of various modern short stories. Practice in writing. Prerequisite: GERM 201 or equivalent. S07, S08

 

341 German Conversation I (3) Emphasis on speaking and listening skills, developed through reading and oral discussion of contemporary texts, along with some literature selections. Prerequisite: GERM 202 or equivalent or consent of instructor.

 

342 German Conversation II (3) Similar to GERM 341, but deals with different conversational topics. Prerequisite: GERM 202 or equivalent or consent of instructor.

 

344 German Colloquy (3) Conversation in German based on readings in German literature or in some other area for which suitable texts are available. May be repeated for credit with different content. Prerequisite: GERM 202 or equivalent or consent of instructor. F07, S08

 

351 German Communication through Culture I (3) Emphasis on the communicative use of German in classroom discussions and in short writings, based on the study of authentic texts and videos which reflect the contemporary German-speaking world, while providing a review of German grammar. Prerequisite: GERM 202 or equivalent or consent of instructor. F06

 

352 German Communication through Culture II (3) Similar to GERM 351, but deals with different texts and videos. Prerequisite: GERM 202 or consent of instructor. S07

 

498/698 Independent Study (1-6) For advanced students who have successfully completed upper-division-level courses in German and are capable of independent work. Also available to students preparing for the DPI content examination in German: Praxis content as an additional means of language preparation. Studies carried on under direction of instructor. May be repeated for a maximum of six credits. Prior approval of instructor required. F06, S07, F07, S08
