102 Health and Wellness (3) Basic knowledge and understanding of health and critical thinking that provides students with the opportunity to develop and implement a plan for reaching their optimal level of functioning physically, emotionally, socially, mentally, spiritually, environmentally and occupationally. 303 Personal Trainer and Group Fitness Instruction (2) Teaching Aerobics - Practical applications of the principles of directing aerobic activities, including components of fitness, physiological-psychological benefits of aerobic activity, training methods and teaching techniques. Students will pursue ACE certification as a Personal Trainer or Group Fitness Instructor. Prerequisites: HHP 102, HHP 110, HHP 158, 203, 264, 265 or consent of instructor. S07, S08

 

304 Principles of Aqua-Dynamics (2) Practical applications of the principles of directing aerobic activities, including components of fitness, physiological-psychological benefits of aerobic activity, training methods and teaching techniques. Prerequisites: HHP 102, 110, 158, 203, 264 and 265 or consent of instructor.

 

312 Lifeguard Training (1) American Red Cross program designed to qualify a person to serve as a non-surf lifeguard after receiving an 80 percent or greater score on all written exams and 100 percent on all skills exams. Students must pass the 500-yard swim and brick retrieval tests on first class meeting. Prerequisite: HHP 110 or consent of instructor. F06, F07

 

313 Level VI, VII Advanced Swimming (ARC) and Emergency Water Safety (1) Level VI and VII involves polishing strokes to enable swimming efficiency and long-distance swimming. Students also engage in a variety of aquatic activities and water safety techniques. Prerequisite: Level V (HHP 213), HHP 110 or consent of instructor.

 

314 Scuba (2) Classroom work and water training required for taking open-water dive. Prerequisite: HHP 110 or consent of instructor.

336 (3) Sports Medicine Laboratory II (3) Continuation course into the prevention, evaluation, care and treatment of injuries as they pertain to physical activity. 343 Physical Education Methods and Curriculum for the Elementary and Middle School Teacher (3) Content areas in human performance for the elementary and middle schools including rhythms, stunts and tumbling, simple games, fitness activities. Teaching methods, instructional materials and evaluation techniques for each content area in a well-balanced human performance curriculum. Mini-teaching in the various areas emphasized. Prerequisite: Admission to the Teacher Education program. S07, S08

 

344 Health Content, Methods and Curriculum for the Elementary and Middle School Teacher (3) Content areas in health education for the elementary and middle schools, including personal health, disease, mental health, nutrition, safety and first aid, drugs, sexuality, consumer health, community health, and environmental health. Teaching methods, instructional materials and evaluation techniques for each of the content areas in a comprehensive school health education program. 352 Principles of Athletic Training (2) Advanced investigation into the care and prevention of injuries that occur with physical activity. A sports medicine approach onto the areas of recognition, management, treatment and rehabilitation of injuries related to athletic, recreational and occupational activity. 362/562 Kinesiology (2) Emphasis on investigation and application of mechanical principles to the study of human motion and the motion of sport objects. Includes systematic approaches for the qualitative and quantitative analysis of the human body as it engages in motor activities. Prerequisite: HHP 110, 264, 265, or BIOL 270 and BIOL 280 or consent of instructor. S07, S08

 

363/563 Exercise Physiology (3) Study of the adaptations and physiological mechanisms involved in the response to exercise. Particular attention given to the circulatory, respiratory, metabolic and neuromuscular adjustments that must be made with increased levels of physical activity. Discusses the influence of environmental factors as well as the role of diet, physical fitness, training, age, gender, and body composition. It is important for health and physical education teachers, athletic trainers, coaches, health promotion specialists and certainly exercise physiologists to have a full understanding of the human body in physiological terms and its response mechanisms to stress. Course acquaints each student with important physiological principles and how they apply to human response to physical activity. Prerequisite: HHP 110, 264/265 or BIOL 270/280 and 282 or consent of instructor. F06, F07

368/568 Drugs, Health and Human Behavior (3) Current, accurate and documented information about drugs and their use and abuse. Attention given to understanding drug abuse, family, prevention, intervention, treatment, and drug-specific information. Prerequisite: HHP 102, 110 or consent of instructor. S07, S08

 

372/572 Consumer Health (2) Issues confronting the consumer in the areas of health services, healing philosophies, health products and the media. Additional time devoted to the psycho-social factors involved in consumer health, as well as the laws, agencies, and organizations protecting the consumer. 412 Lifeguard Training Instructor (1) American Red Cross program to qualify an individual to teach the American Red Cross Water Safety course. Prerequisite: Meet current ARC prerequisite for Lifeguard Instructor Training.

 

413 Water Safety Instructor (WSI) (2) American Red Cross program to qualify an individual to teach the ARC Swimming courses after receiving an 80 percent or greater score on all written exams and 100 percent on all skills exams. Prerequisite: Meet current ARC prerequisite for Water Safety Instructor. S07, S08

The organizations, resources and personnel involved in promotion and maintenance of the health of a community. 496/696 Internship (10-20) On-the-job experience with community agencies to provide students with realistic opportunities to apply their skills to practical problems. A student must work at the site a minimum of 600 hours or 40 hours per week for 15 weeks to enroll in an internship. Prerequisite: Consent of field experiences director. F06, S07, F07, S08

 

700 Research Seminar on the Methodology of Wellness (3) Advanced seminar to instruct students on the procedures and sources for obtaining the latest information in the field and to provide a forum for discussion of advances in the field. 701 Legal Liability in Human Performance and Athletics (3) Case study approach to the liabilities that may be encountered by schools and community agencies in their human performance, athletic, intramural and recreational programs. Interpretation of legal precedents and their implications for the organization and management of sports, including, equipment, facilities, supervision, transportation, and handling of injuries. 703 Supervision of Human Performance (3) History, philosophy, principles and techniques of supervising human performance in the elementary and secondary schools.
