Note: Production, rehearsal or laboratory work is required in many courses in this department. (A maximum of six semester credits of practica/independent study may be applied toward the requirements for any B.A. or B.S. major or minor.) Additional practica/independent study credits may be elected and applied toward graduation but do not count toward the major or minor.  

 

Credit by Examination Policy

It is the policy of the Department of Communicating Arts that performance courses are not appropriate for credit by examination. This policy includes Communicating Arts 110 and 370, which are public speaking courses, and performance courses in drama and mass communication. In all non-performance courses, each faculty member decides whether credit by examination is appropriate for the course for which the faculty member is responsible.  No students may take Communicating Arts 110 on a pass-fail basis.

Mass Communication Concentration

A student with a Mass Communication Concentration must attain a minimum C+ (2.66) in the first three required courses taken (excluding practicum credits) in order to continue in the Mass Communication Concentration.

2. Journalism Track 

Portfolio Statement: As part of their program of study, all Journalism Track students (starting with COMM 191 and COMM 203) are expected to start and maintain a portfolio of newspaper clippings, sound and/or video recordings of journalism work.  This portfolio should also include an up-to-date resume and other appropriate materials.
