A footprint is a calculated impact of a thing or process.

A "carbon footprint" is a measure of the human impact on the atmosphere in terms of the amount of greenhouse gases produced, measured in units of carbon dioxide.

An "ecological footprint" is a measure of total human impact on an ecosystem.
